Whether you are Virginia National Guard, Reserves, or Active Duty in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force or Coast Guard, we are glad to have you as part of our community and are thankful for your service to our county, state, and country.
We understand that as a military family you and your student face unique challenges and it is our hope to provide a smooth transition to our county and schools. On this page you will find information and links to resources that may be of assistance to you during this transition.
Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me or the military liaison at your child's school. My contact information along with the VDOE Military Family Liaison and each New Kent school's liaison is listed at the bottom of the page to assist you.

Planning your arrival to New Kent County:
Once you have decided to move to New Kent, we encourage you to visit our Registration webpage to find information regarding the attendance zones for
elementary school age students and to acquire the forms to complete the registration process. We recommend contacting the school registrar at the school your child will be attending as well. You may reach the registrar by calling the
main office number of the school.
Preparing your child's transfer from his/her former educational institution:
In order to facilitate the receipt of your child's educational records by New Kent, we ask that you have your child's previous school name, address, and phone number.
Resources to assist with your child's academic planning:
Our schools offer different activities and programs to support new students transitioning to New Kent County Public Schools. At the start of each school year, our schools offer parent programs such as School Orientations, Back-to-School Nights, and PTO events throughout the year. Please contact your student’s school counselor to identify specific ways the school may support your family.
Special Education Services
New Kent provides a free appropriate public education (FAPE) and therefore will provide comparable services to those described in your child’s incoming individual education program (IEP) until an NKCPS IEP has been developed. In some cases a reevaluation of your child’s eligibility for special education will need to take place to determine if he or she continues to be eligible for special education in Virginia. During the reevaluation and IEP processes, New Kent County Public Schools will provide your child with comparable services in accordance with the existing IEP. A New Kent County Public Schools IEP generally will be developed within 30 days. For more information regarding special education services, please visit our Special Education and Student Services webpage.
Gifted and Talented Services
While New Kent County Public Schools has established procedures and deadlines for placement into the gifted program, flexibility will be afforded to previously identified students of military parents. If your child has been identified as gifted in their sending school district then they will receive gifted services in New Kent until an evaluation may be conducted. Please visit the Gifted and Talented Programs site for more information about screening procedures for elementary school students and middle school students, as well as programs offered to high school students.
Graduation Requirements
In the state of Virginia, students may earn either a Standard Diploma or Advanced Diploma. The diploma type is determined by the standard and verified credits that the student earns during their high school career. A standard credit is earned by successful completion of a high school credit course. Students earn verified credits when they pass the class and the associated VDOE Standard of Learning (SOL) test. The following subjects have an associated SOL test: World History 1, World History 2, US/VA History, Biology, Chemistry, Geosystems, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and English 11, which includes two different SOL tests in reading and writing.
The total number of verified credits required for graduation is based on when a student enters New Kent County Public Schools for the first time and the diploma type the student is pursuing. Verified credit may be earned (awarded) using any combination of VDOE approved end of course exams, substitute assessments, and industry certifications or licenses. In addition, courses taken outside of Virginia with an end of course state assessment may be reviewed for verified credit following an identified New Kent County Public Schools process. It is recommended that parents work with their student’s school counselor to insure they receive all test scores from the previous school. If you have further questions regarding verified credits, please see your student’s school counselor.
Students who transfer into a Virginia public school after the first 20 hours of instruction of the 12th grade will be given every opportunity to earn a diploma. If this is not possible, the student’s school counselor will arrange to have the previous school award the diploma.
For more information regarding graduation requirements, we recommend contacting your child's school counselor.
