Virginia SUN Bucks Grocery Benefit Begins Soon for Eligible Children

The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) will begin distributing benefits through the Virginia SUN Bucks 2026 program on a rolling basis in mid-June 2026. This federal initiative provides a one-time $120 grocery benefit to eligible school-age children to help ensure they have access to nutritious food during the summer months.

Who is Automatically Eligible?

Your child will automatically qualify for Virginia SUN Bucks if they:

  • receive SNAP or TANF benefits,
  • participate in an income-based Medicaid program, or
  • were approved for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) during the 2025-2026 school year.

If your child qualifies automatically, you do not need to apply. Benefits will be loaded onto existing SNAP EBT cards or mailed on a SUN Bucks card to the address on file with your child's school.

Who Needs to Apply?

If your child does not meet any of the automatic eligibility criteria listed above, you must apply in order to receive the SUN Bucks benefit. Eligibility for applicants is based on household income.

You can:

  • apply online at VirginiaSunBucks.com,
  • download, print, and mail the application to 5600 Cox Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060 by August 31st, or
  • call the SUN Bucks Call Center at 866-513-1414 from June 15th through August 31st to apply over the phone.

When Will Benefits Be Issued?

Benefits will start being issued in June 2026 on a rolling basis. Families who apply may receive benefits at different times depending on when they submit their application. All applications must be submitted by August 31st.

How Will You Receive Your Benefits?

  • Households currently utilizing SNAP: benefits load onto your existing EBT card
  • Other households: a new SUN Bucks card will be mailed to the address on file

Your card balance will be printed on your receipt after each use, or you can check your balance by calling the Virginia SUN Bucks Call Center at 866-513-1414. If your card is lost, contact ConnectEBT customer service at 866-281-2448 to cancel the card and request a replacement.

What Can You Buy with Virginia SUN Bucks?

Benefits can be used to purchase food such as fruits, vegetables, meat, whole grains, and dairy at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other locations that accept SNAP EBT benefits.
