NKCPS Announces Support Staff of the Year

New Kent County Public Schools proudly announces the 2025-2026 Support Staff of the Year, honoring outstanding staff members who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure schools operate smoothly and students are supported every day.

Each year, one support staff member from every NKCPS school is recognized for their dedication and impact. The 2025-2026 school-level honorees are:

  • Ms. Kim Dotson, clinic aide at George W. Watkins Elementary School
  • Ms. Sandra Berkley, instructional assistant at New Kent Elementary School
  • Ms. Laura Wilson, instructional assistant at Quinton Elementary School
  • Ms. Yvette Garner, custodian at New Kent Middle School
  • Mr. Richard Pennycuff, school security officer at New Kent High School

From this distinguished group, Mr. Pennycuff was selected as the NKCPS Division Support Staff Member of the Year.

Ms. Kim Dotson, GWES clinic aide, is recognized for her resilient and positive attitude. She is incredibly attentive to students, supporting them with kindness and compassion. Her benevolence extends to fellow staff members and parents, helping create a welcoming atmosphere for all.

"Ms. Dotson comes to work every day with a smile and shows students unbelievable kindness," said GWES Principal Ms. Tammy Krejcarek. "Not only is she aware of student needs, habits, and preferences, but she also communicates effectively with parents during times of stress. She goes the extra mile for staff—bringing birthday treats, cheering up those having a rough day, and inspiring us all to be better."

Ms. Dotson’s commitment to students and staff showcases her incredible dedication to safety and care.

New Kent Elementary School

Support Staff of the Year: Ms. Sandra Berkley

Ms. Sandra Berkley, an instructional assistant at NKES, consistently goes above and beyond for students and staff. Recognized for her diligence and tireless work ethic, her impact spans nearly three decades.

"Ms. Berkley is our Support Staff of the Year because of her unwavering dedication to our students and our school community," shared NKES Principal Dr. Therese O’Dea. "For 29 years, she has poured her time, care, and commitment into making NKES a better place, and her impact can be seen in the lives of the students and staff she supports each day."

Ms. Berkley’s unwavering support and determination have strengthened the NKES community and fostered a welcoming environment where all can thrive.


Quinton Elementary School

Ms. Laura Wilson is an essential part of the QES community, rising to challenges without hesitation and providing students with the tools they need to excel. As an instructional assistant, she advocates tirelessly for students both in and outside the classroom.

"Ms. Wilson is an invaluable member of our school community," stated QES Principal Ms. Chris Pilger. "From the moment she arrives each day, she immediately jumps in to help—whether it’s making copies, calming a child, helping students catch up on missed work, or simply sharing a smile."

Students and staff alike are fortunate to benefit from Ms. Wilson’s calm presence and commitment.

Support Staff of the Year: Ms. Yvette Garner

Ms. Yvette Garner exceeds expectations as a custodian at NKMS, ensuring facilities are not only clean, but truly the best they can be. She works tirelessly to maintain a spotless environment, often arriving early and staying late to ensure no detail is overlooked.

"As a leader among her crew, her work ethic is nothing short of phenomenal," shared NKMS Assistant Principal Ms. Vickie Kimbrell. "Ms. Garner understands that a clean, bright environment is essential for morale, and her dedication plays a vital role in making our school a better place to learn and work."

Beyond her technical skills, Ms. Garner is a pillar of the NKMS community, known for her consistently positive relationships with students and staff.


New Kent High School & NKCPS Division

Support Staff of the Year: Mr. Richard Pennycuff

Mr. Richard Pennycuff, a school security officer at NKHS, exemplifies excellence through a lifetime of service, leadership, and dedication to the New Kent community. He fosters strong relationships with students and invests in their success both in and outside of school through his involvement in football and wrestling coaching.

"Mr. Pennycuff’s commitment to service, his genuine care for students, and his positive presence make him an invaluable member of the NKHS family and deserving of the Support Staff Member of the Year recognition," shared NKHS Principal Ms. Allison Strickland.

Prior to joining NKHS, Mr. Pennycuff served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps and completed a 30‑year career in law enforcement. He also brings experience as a former teacher and School Resource Officer, making him uniquely equipped to support and connect with students.

Notably, this marks the first time in NKCPS history that the Division Support Staff Member of the Year has been recognized during their first year of employment.

"Every year, we pick one person out of hundreds of people to be Division Support Staff Member of the Year—never in the history of this award has it been won by somebody in their first year," said Superintendent Dr. Brian J. Nichols. "So now, you can be Rookie of the Year and the MVP of the school division—and there’s only one person who can do that: Mr. Pennycuff."


The 2027 Support Staff of the Year embody our division's mission to empower, engage, and elevate every student, helping create a vibrant, supportive, and successful school community across the division.
