Imagination Library Now Available to NKCPS Families

New Kent County Public Schools is excited to share a free resource now available to families in our community: Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, delivered locally through Imagination Library 804.

Children between birth and age five who live in New Kent County can now be registered to receive a free, high-quality, age-appropriate book in the mail every month until their fifth birthday—at no cost to families. The books arrive addressed to the child by name, creating a special gifting experience that helps build a lifelong love of reading right from the start.

About the Program

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is the flagship program of The Dollywood Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Since Dolly Parton started the program in 1995 to serve children in her home county in Tennessee, it has grown into a worldwide initiative that gifts more than three million free books each month to children across five countries.

Locally, the program is coordinated by Read to Them, the organization behind Imagination Library 804, which is working to bring this opportunity to families right here in our community.

Why Early Literacy Matters

Research shows that early exposure to books and reading plays a critical role in a child's development. Ninety percent of a child's physical brain development happens in the first three years of life, and children who enter Kindergarten ready to learn are far more likely to master basic skills by age 11. Having books in the home strengthens the bond between children and their families while nurturing the skills kids need to succeed in school and beyond.
