Pre-K/Early Learning FAQs

A Day in the Life of a Pre-K Teacher

Step into the classroom with Ms. April Acheson, a dedicated Early Learning/Pre-K teacher at Quinton Elementary School, as we follow A Day in the Life of a Pre-K Teacher at New Kent County Public Schools!

Watch as our Early Learning/Pre-K students experience a full day of engaging learning from arrival to dismissal. From morning greeting circles and literacy activities to math lessons, story time, and centers, each day is filled with hands-on learning experiences. Students also enjoy breakfast and lunch, recess, naptime, and closing circles that help build social-emotional skills and kindergarten readiness.

This comprehensive approach reflects our division's commitment to excellence in early learning. We're proud of our youngest learners and the exceptional educators who inspire them every day. With two adults in every classroom and comprehensive support throughout the day, our Early Learning/Pre-K program provides a nurturing environment where children thrive.

Under Virginia's Quality Birth to Five (VQB5) system, which measures and promotes high-quality early learning experiences, our schools have earned outstanding recognition:

  • Quinton Elementary School earned Exceeds Expectations status and was named to the VQB5 Excellence Honor Roll for the 2024-2025 school year.
  • George W. Watkins Elementary School and New Kent Elementary School both earned Meets Expectations status for their Pre-K/Early Learning programs.

The VQB5 system recognizes programs that demonstrate exceptional performance and a strong commitment to continuous quality improvement—another example of our district's dedication to providing quality education at every level. You can learn more about the VQB5 system at on the VDOE website.

Our Early Learning/Pre-K program continues to expand and improve through the Virginia Preschool Initiative and our partnership with Ready Region and Thrive Birth to Five. We currently serve more than 100 children across seven classes, providing high-quality, inclusive early learning experiences that nurture each child's social, emotional, and academic development.

Early Learning/Pre-K applications open in February each year!
