School Bus Safety
New Kent County Public Schools transports over 2500 students every day on buses. It is our goal that all students arrive at school and are transported home safely. To ensure that this happens, we encourage parents and students to understand the bus routes, transportation procedures, and appropriate bus riding behavior.
Please remember to follow these guidelines in regards to preparing your student to ride the bus:
- Due to the number of students moving into the county, the routes are subject to change periodically.
- Students need to report to the bus stop 5 minutes prior to pick-up times.
- In subdivisions, instead of stopping at each house, a centralized bus stop will be created. Students may be required to walk up to three-tenths of a mile.
- Students in 1st grade and below are required to have an authorized person present at the bus stop. If an authorized person is not present, the student will be returned to his/her school.
Bus Schedules
Students are routed using the home address that is listed in PowerSchool. Please complete a Transportation Request Form if you are making changes to your student's transportation (i.e. you have enrolled a new student, need to change a pickup or drop-off location to one not listed in PowerSchool, or if you student will not be using school transportation). Please note: All requests must reside within the zoned school to be eligible for transportation (including shared custody and daycare).
Parents and guardians can view their student's pickup and drop-off locations through PowerSchool three weeks before the start of school. Bus routes and times are also available through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Please note: Student bus information is not viewable through the PowerSchool mobile app.
Parents and guardians can track their student's bus through the Edulog Parent Portal Lite App. Please see important information about using this app:

FAQs
Question: My bus stop is too far from my house, what should I do?
Answer: In subdivisions, we create centralized bus stops, and students can walk up to 0.3 mile (3-tenths of a mile) from their mailbox. If the stop is further than that, or if you feel that the stop location is not safe, please fill out a Transportation Request Form and submit it. This form is available in the Bus Schedules section. We will review the stop and will contact you with a decision.
Question: I filled out the form before the deadline, but my changes are not showing up in the system. What should I do?
Answer: Call the transportation office immediately (804-966-9670) and speak to a staff member, and they will assist you. This is our busiest time of the year, so if you reach the voicemail, please leave a detailed message with the student's name and concern, and your contact information (please speak each word clearly and slowly), and someone will return your call before 5 p.m. on Friday. You can also always complete a Let's Talk form to provide us with information or feedback.
Driver Information
All of our school bus drivers are equipped with a Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License with passenger, air brakes, and school bus endorsements. Our drivers completed a very detailed physical with a licensed professional, Nurse Practitioner or Doctor, to ensure that they are in good health and fit for duty. Drivers must complete and pass a drug test, set up on random drug/alcohol testing, and records will be pulled from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). They must have a good driving record (once hired, it will be monitored automatically through DMV, and if any record changes should occur, DMV immediately notifies NKCPS). Drivers must successfully complete a criminal background check through the state police and child protective services (same as teachers) in order to be eligible for employment within the school division, as well as completion of a training program issued through the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Participation in additional training throughout the year is required.
