Virginia SUN Bucks 2025: $120 Grocery Benefit for Eligible Children Begins July 18

The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) will begin distributing benefits through the Virginia SUN Bucks 2025 program starting July 18th, 2025. This initiative provides a one-time $120 grocery benefit to eligible school-age children to help ensure they have access to nutritious food during the summer months.

Who Is Automatically Eligible?

More than 650,000 Virginia children will be automatically enrolled. Your child will automatically qualify for Virginia SUN Bucks if they:

  • receive SNAP or TANF benefits,

  • participate in an income-based Medical Assistance program, or

  • were approved for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) during the 2024–2025 school year.

If your child qualifies automatically, you do not need to apply. Benefits will begin to appear on SNAP EBT cards or mailed SUN Bucks cards starting July 18th. Be aware that SUN Bucks cards may arrive before the benefits are activated, but the funds will not be available until the 18th. Cards are being mailed on a rolling basis throughout the summer.

Who Needs to Apply?

If your child does not meet any of the automatic eligibility criteria listed above, you must apply in order to receive SUN Bucks.

You can:

  • download and print the application at VirginiaSunBucks.com, then mail it to:
    5600 Cox Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060, OR

  • call the SUN Bucks Call Center at 866-513-1414 from now until August 15th, 2025 to apply over the phone.

To complete the application, you’ll need:

  • Your child’s full legal name and date of birth

  • Home address

  • School name and school division

  • Student ID

  • Household income information

When Will Benefits Be Issued?

  • Automatically eligible students will begin receiving funds on or after July 18th, 2025

  • Approved SUN Bucks applicants will receive benefits starting August 1st, 2025

  • All SUN Bucks benefits will be distributed by the end of September 2025
