College, Career, & Life Readiness

This section highlights how NKCPS supports college, career, and life readiness by embedding K-12 content that addresses the Three Es (Employment, Enlistment, and Enrollment).

"True North is the internal compass that guides you successfully through life [...]. It is your orienting point—your fixed point in a spinning world [...]."

                                                                               -Bill George, author, True North

OUR CCLR JOURNEY

Nearly five years ago, we began a journey to redefine college, career, and life readiness (CCLR). Through a team of stakeholders, we outlined the components of CCLR that defined the skills every student would possess by graduation. Our Portrait of a New Kent Graduate was born!

The elements of the Portrait of a Graduate:

  • Communicator

  • Collaborator

  • Ethical & Global Steward

  • Creative & Critical Thinker

  • Goal Directed & Resilient Individual

Supporting curriculum and activities were embedded. This process is living, continually being delivered, evaluated, and revised. Our students are prepared to contribute to a diverse and changing world. The result is a life-ready individual with 21st century skills.

Key Questions Teachers Can Ask

What Our Students Are Saying:

"With competition in the workplace you always have to go in with the mentality that someone could be better than you, the objective is to BE that someone. [...] By teaching these skills in the classroom, teachers are shaping the next generation. This generation will be better prepared than previous generations."

-Annabella Seoane, Class of 2023

“Teachers need to build in the Portrait of a New Kent Graduate, because it shows they care about students' success. When teachers care, the students feel more motivated to care."

-Mason Walker, Class of 2022

"I believe that teachers should care about teaching the students these skills. They can give their own personal thoughts and help students to avoid the mistakes that they may have made in life."

-Charlotte Verdu, Class of 2022
