ACE Identification

The search for and identification of gifted students is a continuous process based on classroom observation and/or referral of students. Referrals to the gifted program may be made by school personnel, parents, peers, or the students themselves.  Additional information can be found on page 6of the Gifted Plan.

The school screening committee is responsible for implementing a two-step screening and assessment process. After a referral, the initial screening is made to examine classroom performance, SOL scores, and standardized test scores, if there are any. If these grades and scores reflect the potential for gifted behaviors, the committee recommends individual testing. With parent permission, achievement tests and a test of mental ability are administered, and classroom teachers complete gifted behavior rating scales. The committee then holds a second screening to examine the four criteria that determine placement:

  • aptitude scores (WASI or WISC III)
  • achievement scores (Woodcock-Johnson III)
  • grades
  • teacher rating scales (GATES)
Additional information can be found on pages 7-11 of the Gifted Plan.
