Sixth Grade Pull OutSecond Semester 2009 - 2010For the first several weeks of this semester, we will be studying mathematical patterns. It is often said that mathematics is the science of patterns. These patterns can be real or imagined, visual or mental, static or dynamic, qualitative or quantitative. Mathematical patterns can be found everywhere--in the physical universe, in the living world, or even in our own minds. Because of this, the National Council of the Teachers of Mathematics says mathematics instructional programs must include attention to patterns so that all students
For the rest of the semester , we will be investigating Pop-Up Engineering and Geometric concepts. We will use the mechanism of paper engineering (pop-up mechanisms) to produce 3-D geometric models which illustrate geometric concepts. The process of constructing these models allows us to build upon our spatial awareness studies begun in fifth grade ACE pull-out. This approach transports the students beyond the static two-dimensional aspects of geometry to a more dynamic, life like geometric world where shapes “move” and may be seen as part of a three dimensional scene. Please come and visit us anytime. Just check with your student for meeting times. No need to call me ahead of time, just check in at the main office and tell them you want to visit the ACE class. If you have any questions, please e-mail me at reaston@nkcps.k12.va.us or call me. Thank you for your cooperation and support. |
